What are the differences between traditional solid hardwood flooring versus engineered hardwood flooring?

Solid hardwood floors are made of planks milled from a single piece of lumber, while engineered hardwood floors use lumber in a layered construction process.

With engineered hardwood flooring, multiple plies of wood are glued together in a cross-grain pattern. The layers are bonded under high pressure and heat. This process makes engineered hardwood more stable through changeable Ontario seasons.

Solid hardwood floors do not perform well with fluctuations in humidity, which is a common issue in our Ontario climate. In dry winter months, solid wood will shrink and gap between planks. Alternatively, in the hot and humid summer months, solid hardwood planks will expand and create cupping and warped boards.

While the layers in engineered hardwood flooring make it more structurally stable & less susceptible to movement. With both solid hardwood and engineered hardwood, it is essential to control humidity levels within manufactures specifications in all indoor environments.

Both engineered and solid wood floors are available in a variety of species, stains, and finishes.

What is the proper way to clean my hardwood floor?

Proper care goes a long way in maintaining beautiful hardwood floors. Sweep or vacuum regularly when you see accumulation of dirt, dust and debris. These can all cause your hardwood floor to scratch. When vacuuming, use a floor-brush attachment.

When mopping hardwood floors, less is more! Use a damp or dry mop and never let liquids stand on your hardwood floor because water left to stand on your floor will damage it.

Many cleaning products contain abrasive chemicals that will dull and damage the finish of hardwood floors. We do not recommend the use of water, vinegar, soaps, detergents, and cleaners, other than those recommended specifically for solid hardwood and engineered hardwood floors.

NEVER WAX HARDWOOD FLOORS

Installed hardwood floors are finished with stain and typically multiple urethane coatings. Wax and oil is not necessary. If you’d like to use a spray to clean your hardwood floor, we recommend a low PH cleaner that does not contain oils or waxes.

Hardwood maintenance cleaning kits from Bona or hardwood manufacture can help you clean and maintain your floors. For more information on cleaning and caring for your hardwood floors, see the floor’s product guide.

What is LVP?

LVP or Luxury Vinyl Plank typically features the look of wood with the durability of vinyl. LVP is made of compressed layers of PVC vinyl with a high resolution image overlay that mimics the look of another material – usually hardwood or stone. LVP “boards” are similar to hardwood flooring planks, or laminate flooring planks. LVP is made up of multiple layers of vinyl but the main layer is its vinyl core, which makes the planks durable, flexible and easy to maintain.

The two most durable and most popular types of engineered luxury vinyl planks are referred to as Stone Plastic Composite (SPC) and Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) flooring. The benefits include ease of cleaning, longevity, inexpensive installation, comfort, and versatility. LVP has become increasingly popular because of its timeless design appeal, water-resistance and wide varieties of colors and textures.

What kind of floor mat should I use on my LVP?

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) has a vinyl top layer. We recommend choosing floor mats that offer a cotton, non-slip backing. Be aware that oils from the backings of synthetic mats can bleed into the floor and cause discolouration. We do not recommend mats that use a grippy rubber backing because this material can also transfer to your floor

Is LVP flooring waterproof?

While many flooring products claim to be water resistant, luxury vinyl plank is always a water-resistant flooring choice and some offer waterproof performance. Be sure to check with each manufacturer and examine the warranty before installing in areas that could receive large amounts of water.

Water-resistant LVP is ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. LVP (including Wood Plastic Composite or Stone Plastic Composite) features multiple layers, including a durable wear layer and a rigid core. LVP is resistant to moisture, heavy foot traffic, scratches and spills.

Before installation, does LVP flooring need to acclimate? How do I store my LVP prior to installation?

Vinyl flooring expands or shrinks based on its environment.

LVP Flooring should be installed in indoor climate-controlled locations between 65°F – 85°F (18.3°C – 29.5°C).

The surface or substrate that you are installing on top of should be acclimated at no less than 65 °F (18.3 °C) for 48 hours before, during and after installation.

 For storage:

1. Always store boxes on a flat and level surface.

2. Never store boxes on their sides.

3. Protect box corners from damage.

Can I install my kitchen cabinets on top of my LVP or Laminate (floating floor)?

You should not install cabinets directly on a floating floor. The weight of the cabinets can prevent LVP flooring from expanding as needed. Installing cabinets over LVP could cause the floor to buckle.

What is WPC flooring?

Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) is one of the most popular types of engineered luxury vinyl planks.  It includes a high resolution image, overlaid onto vinyl. The image resembles wood and  WPC is coated with a transparent wear layer to protect the floor from stains, scratches and fading. WPC uses real wood engineered with special properties such as moisture resistance and higher durability.WPC is luxury vinyl flooring taken up a notch with a special waterproof core that makes it perfect for just about any room in the house. WPC typically is DIY-friendly as an interlocking or “floating” floor. Some WPC can also be glued down for a permanent solution.

What is SPC flooring?

Stone Plastic Composite (SPC)  flooring is also a popular type of luxury vinyl that uses a mix of stone and plastic in its core layer. Similar to LVP in that it includes a high resolution image, overlaid onto vinyl. The image resembles stone and  SPC is coated with a transparent wear layer to protect the floor from stains, scratches and fading.

The core material in SPC is a hybrid of plastic and compressed limestone powder. This makes the planks hard and rigid, rather than soft and flexible. Designed to be 100 percent waterproof, humidity or moisture will not cause planks to swell or damage your SPC rigid core vinyl flooring.

What is the difference between LVP, WPC and SPC?

SPC, WPC and LVP flooring can be installed over virtually any solid subfloor, including concrete (flat and level surfaces).

SPC flooring is the most durable waterproof vinyl flooring option on the market. It will last longer, resist dents and hold up better to wear and tear. SPC’s rigidity also provides more support under your feet. SPC is also slightly thicker than LVP and is typically only available in a click floating plank format. It’s texture and appearance tend to have a more realistic look.

WPC is more affordable than real wood but slightly more expensive than SPC. It is less rigid and dense than SPC and retains some warmth in its core.

Glue down LVP or loose lay flooring is a more flexible product and will contour better to an unlevel floor. It provides additional warmth and does not have a tongue and groove system, making board repairs much easier. It will take on the shape of any imperfections in the subfloor, so it’s imperative to install over good one-side plywood, or a smooth concrete floor.

What are popular carpet styles?

Carpeting – also known as broadloom or wall-to-wall carpet –  comes in both natural or synthetic materials, ranging from natural Wool, to synthetic materials like Nylon, Polyester and Polypropylene. There is a wide selection of colours and fiber types, as well as construction to consider when purchasing carpet for your home or business. The style of carpet you choose can depend on your budget and needs. Some carpets boast durability and stain resistance as key features, while others are more plush underfoot. Carpet is timeless and cozy, making it a popular choice for many homeowners and establishments like theaters and hotels.

Here are a few popular carpet styles:

Berber

Berber carpeting comes in an array of finishes and is constructed to last, resist stains and feel comfortable to walk on. The shorter loop pattern means it will work well in high-traffic areas like hallways. Because of its loop construction, Berber is not the best pet-friendly choice as a cat’s claw can catch a loop and cause the fiber to pull out and leave behind a long “run” in the surface.

Frieze

Frieze carpet is essentially the modern version of the bulky shag carpet from the 1960s and 1970s. Constructed of thinner fiber strands than traditional shag carpet, Frieze carpets have a thinner, leaner look.  Frieze carpets are soft on the feet and great at hiding dirt and footprints. That said – they can be difficult to clean and should be vacuumed frequently to avoid a buildup of dirt and debris.

Plush Pile (Saxony)

Plush Pile carpet – also known as Saxony – is a style of cut-pile carpet where each of the yarns in the pile is cut to precisely the same length making a sleek, smooth surface. During manufacturing, the tufts are sheared to make the plush pile perfectly even. It’s made in many different colors and can be one solid colour or blends of colours. Its attractiveness and consistent look make plush one of the most popular carpet styles on the market.

Plush Pile or Saxony fibers are not as long as a Frieze but they stand higher than most Berber carpets or cut-and-loop pile carpets. All in all, this is a classic look that can work well for both formal and casual settings.

There are many benefits to using carpet. Carpet adds soundproofing, it’s a safety feature–especially on stairs, and carpet provides insulation and warmth.

Whether you prefer shag, cut/loop patterns, plush or woven, broadloom carpet can be cut and bound in-house to help you create a layered designer that’s trend setting.

What is carpet tile and how can it benefit a large space?

Carpet tiles are square or rectangular pieces of carpet that are laid together to cover an area and give the appearance of wall to wall carpeting.

Carpet Tile is a popular flooring choice for large spaces or commercial environments. What makes them an ideal choice is they offer the ability to remove a stained or damaged carpet tile and replace it with a new one, saving the cost and disruption of having to replace an entire room of carpet. This makes them a great choice for offices and kids’ playrooms, too!. The variety of shapes give design flexibility and the affordability can’t be beat. Check out our carpet tile image gallery here.

What is the best carpet for pets?

Synthetic pile carpets are best for homes with pets. Both nylon and polypropylene are excellent as they are stain-resistant and durable. Because of Berber’s loop construction, berber is not a pet-friendly choice as a cat’s claw can catch a loop and cause the fiber to pull out and leave behind a long “run” in the surface.

What is ceramic tile made out of?

Ceramic Tiles are made from clay that is heated by a “firing” process using very high temperatures in a kiln. This kiln-fired process hardens the clay making it a very durable material for many applications like flooring, showers, backsplashes and more. Ceramic tiles are twice as porous as porcelain, making them absorbent to liquids and stains. Check out Aristocrat Floors Tile options here.

What is porcelain tile made of?

While ceramic tiles are made from red or white clay, porcelain tiles are made from a light-colored clay. Porcelain clay is a finer clay, while ceramic has a coarser composition. Porcelain clay is fired  at higher temperatures resulting in a tile that is stronger, more durable and more moisture-resistant than other ceramic tiles. Porcelain’s surface is smooth and non-porous so it will not stain or absorb any liquids. The durability and strength gives porcelain tile the longest lifespan.

What are popular natural stone products? How does stone differ from tile?

Marble, limestone, slate and granite are natural stones frequently used for flooring and other applications like indoor feature walls & backsplashes. Stone is a natural product cut from stone quarries around the world,  whereas ceramic and porcelain tiles are a man-made manufactured product. Stone is a durable product but porous. It  requires a protective sealant to help protect its porous surface from staining. Natural stone offers unique flooring patterns and one-of-a-kind looks and as a result is typically  more expensive than ceramic or porcelain tile.

Aristocrat Floors carries a unique selection of natural stone products, including marble, slate, and travertine (limestone). Browse our stone image gallery for inspiration.
